Which quick setup option are you referring to? what's not working? what specifically is failing?

    1. Download sample video or audio content for your player. You can use your own content as well, but first make sure that your videoimage, or audio content is supported on BrightSign players.
    2. Place the content on the root folder of your SD card (e.g. "SD:/").
    3. Turn off the BrightSign player by unplugging the power adapter (or Ethernet cable if the unit is being powered by PoE).
    4. Insert the SD card into the player.
    5. Turn on the player by reconnecting the power. The content will begin playing after a few moments.

Note: Content files on an SD card will play alphabetically in a continuous loop.

This doesn't work... it requires a setup. When I hook it to the computer to set it up I can not finish the process because the firmware option has nothing to select

If the unit doesn't have network access, the firmware option wouldn't show.

But, you don't have to setup the player to play content.

-If the player can't find any recognized extensions on the sd card, then it would try to go into setup.  What are the extensions used on the card?

-If the player doesn't see any content in the root of the card, it would try to do setup

-If the player can't read the file system on the card, it would go into setup. How is the sd card formatted? what size is it?

You can log into the player's diag server even when it shows you the setup screen. Go to player ip at index.html:

    http://player'sipaddress/index.html.

Then, click on the sd tab. Does the player show card contents or does it show nothing for the sd card?

I use a mac and I just dragged and dropped the mp4 on it. I was hoping the player would just read the card and loop the mp4

I'm going to try the last thing you said because maybe it didn't recognize the mp4

If it's a 128GB card then it came formatted as exfat, and unless you'd already updated the firmware on the player to 6.2.94, then it won't be able to read exfat. If I had to guess, I'd say 99% likelihood this is your issue. series 3 players need 6.2.94 to read exfat, and just about every card I've seen that's 32GB or larger comes formatted as exfat.

You can use a fat32 formatted card to install firmware, downloaded from support.brightisgn.biz, under downloads...

    Or, reformat the sd card..

Please log into the player's ip address using the method I descdribed, at index.html...and click on the log tab.

Click on the download log link and paste the contents of the log here. It will show us if the player sees the sd card.

Next, click on the sd tab, another way for us to see if the player's reading the card. Please paste a screenshot of the sd tab.
