Error Message - The attached storage device is write protected..."

Hello,

We've had a support request from a customer site which has a number of BrightSign HD220 and HD1020 units, recently 3 of the HD220 units all displayed the same error message onscreen:

"The attached storage device is write protected. Remove it, enable writing, and reboot the device."

The SD cards have not been removed from the players at any point and we don't believe any additional content has been programmed to the units recently, also all three came up at the same time. The units are all setup for Local Network updating which was tested a couple of years ago and all worked ok. Given that no changes to the SD cards or the programming have been made, do you have any suggestions as to how we can resolve this issue and what has caused it?

Many thanks,

Charlie Goodliffe

    Hi Charlie,

Did the error happen on all players at the same time?

Did it happen right after someone published presentation to the units? If so, was the firmware update included in the presentation or not?

What firmware version is currently installed on the units?

You can power up the unit without SD card (or USB stick), and the unit will output the firmware version on the screen.

Or, if a diagnostic web server is enabled on the unit, you can enter the ip address of the unit in a web browser and see the current firmware version.

Or, if the unit is setup for Local Networking or BrightSign Networking mode, you can click on the Manage tab in BrightAuthor, then right-click on the unit and see its firmware version.

Hi, thanks for getting back to me. The BrightSigns are running firmware v4.2.47 and the BrightAuthor version in use is v3.2.0.12.

The customer has recently had a change of staff and our old contact is no longer there so getting information from them is proving a bit tricky, but they don't think that any presentations were published to the units for some months. We only have remote access to the system via a 3G dongle which the customer now cannot locate, they are trying to get the system online so that we can log in to make some more progress.

I have just had a look through the original setup files created for the Local Networking functionality, these appear to have the Playback, Event and State logging all enabled - over a long period of time, could this cause the SD cards to become totally full, would this explain the "write protected" error message? If so, if we can get remote access I guess we could manually delete the logs from each unit, is there a way to disable the logging feature to stop this happening again?

    Thanks,

    Charlie

Yes, it might be the SD card became full, especially if the media rss feeds are included in your presentation. If so, there is no easy way to clean the SD card remotely. I would recommend you to power the unit off, remove SD card, erase it, then publish a presentation to a blank SD card and power up the BrightSign unit with it. The BrightSign unit is supposed to manage the content on the SD card and delete all unused files automatically, but this requires the latest BrightAuthor and firmware versions.

Hi thanks for your help with this, I've just been talking the customer through accessing the web pages of the BrightSigns, the SD cards were indeed 100% full, we cleared out all the log folders and it dropped back to around 29%! This should solve the problem for the foreseeable future, they are going to try and get the system online at some point so we can update the firmware and republish the projects with the latest version of BrightAuthor.

    Thanks again,

    Charlie

    Hi amigos.

the same problem is happening to me.

I found when you publish in stand alone way, is working fine!!

When publish my presentation in 'local network'  the "The attached storage device is write protected. Remove it, enable writing, and reboot the device." message occur again...

    Device : HD222

    Device firmware : v.5.1.48

    Author release : 4.1.0.10

Work around : 1- different sd card, 2-format different sd card, 3- erase device using autorun.brs in this example ( http://support.brightsign.biz/entries/21796878-How-do-I-restore-reset-a-unit-to-Factory-Default-settings-)

    Any suggestions ?

Today at 5:35pm, we had an HD1010W outage with the same message.  Is there a way to troubleshoot remotely?  We use media RSS feeds as part of the service.  I would love some coaching on how to manage this problem.  Thank you.

If your player is setup for the BrightSign Networking, you can open BrightAuthor and go to Tools > Advanced > Unit control. Paste in the serial # of the player, and add the following two commands
                    a. Recovery  (with a reformat)
                    b. Reboot

Once the two commands are added, the player should reboot if it's still calling in, and then clean the card, and re-download a presentation from the cloud.

Additionally, in BrightAuthor you can setup how much space on the SD card should be dedicated to different kinds of content. This will prevent the card from filling up like it's been doing. Storage management can be enabled on the Edit > Preferences > Storage tab.

We just ran into the same error message on one of our seven LS-422 units, each of which have a 16GB SD card and the latest firmware (6.0.51).

BrightSign, you have a bug somewhere in your firmware that is preventing the automatic clearing out of old files on the SD Card once it gets full.  It's that simple.

I have a similar problem. The hd223 player does not see the memory card. Cards from different manufacturers tried (kingsnon, sandisk, a-data, transend) but nothing helped. All logs from the player are downloaded. Firmware version 6.2.138.
At that moment I installed 8 such players on the customer’s site, there was a problem with only one.

I had this similar issue on model XD1034. Error: "The storage device is missing, has not been formatted, or is damaged. Please remove, reformat, and reinsert the storage device (or use a new one). Then, reboot the device."

5x device all presented this error at the same time.

Issue was resolved by reformatting the micro SD card and re-uploading autorun.zip

Could you advise what is the root cause and if there is any action required to prevent this from happening moving forward?

This happened to us when I used Lexar Platinum II micro-SD cards instead of the BrightSign cards.  We had used the Platinum II full size SD cards previously on the XD1032 player, and other models, and it worked well.  But the micro-SD version just could not handle the quantity of read/write cycles necessary.  The players...really the SD cards... (about 30 of them in a small signage network) would fail within a week of each other.  Performing a Reformat/Recover remotely would resolve the problem for about 30 days then it would happen again.  Switching out to the cards sold by BrightSign resolved the problems.  Now 35,000 players later and we have very few issues with cards.
