no audio over hdmi on hd222

have 3 hd222 units synced for picture and am trying to get the audio running. the data sheet says ac3 audio is passed through, which i assume means it should be getting to my surround preamp.

the files are mp4 with ac3 audio in 5.1 format. i'm assuming this should be doable. my patching is set up to run hdmi out of the master hd222 to the preamp, which passes the picture through to a projector. that part works. i do get the picture on screen. the audio is not being detected, though.

what am i missing here?

thanks,

BabaG

    further info:

the preamp is ok. tried it with another version of the content, also mp4/h264/ac3 and it detected through the same hdmi port and played fine from an asus media player. obviously different but does show that the preamp is ok.

also, opened the brightauthored content in the publishing folder on my laptop. it was this media that was copied to the player in the current situation. found the media file, which brightauthor had named sha1-3317935b93e67e98773a6efe44fb1bb13b1cbb9e. it played fine on the laptop in windows media player.

    thanks,

Can you send us the content from the player's Log tab in the Diagnostic Web Server?

There was an old bug where multichannel audio in MP4/MOV was misdetected as stereo and not passed out.  The workaround there was to use a TS file instead.

how do i get you that info? the players in question are in a standalone setup, not connected to any computers.

    thanks,

If it's standalone, enable Logging in the Unit Setup then apply the new configuration - logs will be written to the card.

Or you could just re-wrap your content in a transport stream and see if there's a difference.

how do i enable logging? all i did was create the media, pug in the players and turned it all on. haven't seen anything online about how to get at settings without a computer.

also, any links on re-wrapping to ts?

    thanks again,

Check that your presentation is set for HDMI Passthrough on the audio output (in Zone Properties) - it defaults to Stereo which will give you no audio output at all if the source is multichannel AC3 (or DTS, or any other format the BrightSign Player does not have a decoder for).

When you published the content from BrightAuthor, did you select Standalone with Setup or just Standalone?
Publish using Standalone with Setup will bring up the Unit Setup dialog where you can configure the player.

Synchronization requires a network connection between the players, so you must have a switch connecting them all.  If setting the HDMI audio output to passthrough doesn't fix the issue...

Enable the Diagnostic Web Server in the Unit Setup, then connect your laptop to the same switch and you can access the player's Diagnostic Web Server at http://ip.address.of.player/

    http://www.brightsign.biz/support/quickstart/
    http://www.brightsign.biz/training/step-step/

You can use FFMPEG or one of the numerous tools out there to convert from MP4 to TS.

do players have some kind of default ip address? how do i find the player's ip address? nothing else has worked. have the master player plugged into the switch with the laptop now but don't know the address i'm looking for or how to find it.

Power up the player without storage and it will show a BrightSign logo screen with player model, serial number, IP address, MAC address and firmware version.

ok. just discovered that every time i restart the player the ip address changes. great. now i've got the laptop set up with the whole system, the three players and projectors. two are off for the moment. trying to access the master player. it shows ip address as 169.254.21.221. when i type that into the url in firefox i get a 'can't connect to server' error. sigh.

pinging the address from cmd does connect. now what?

If you are seeing a 169.254 address then the unit is failing to connect to the DHCP server - I would check the VLAN being assigned on the port and make sure there is a helper address to get to the DHCP srever.  If the addresses change ask the DHCP admin to reserver the addresses from the DHCP scope - you will need to give him the MAC addresses - this would be the preferred setup anyway.

    Hi,

First, you will need to re-create a setup card and enable the Diagnostic Web Server as per what is described in the below FAQ:

    http://support.brightsign.biz/entries/46723944-How-to-obtain-player-Logs

A static IP address is probably best. then once the DWS enabled,  please capture  the kernel log (whilst playing your presentation) as per what is described in the above FAQ.

ok. so, i assigned a static ip address to the player via the brightauthor device setup described above. then had to reassign my laptop a static address similar to the player to get them to see each other. i can now see the player's setup page. nothing there regarding audio. video tab shows 1920x1080x24p, which is automatically detected and correct. current card has no video, just the setup info, though. presumably, the video info pertains to the last settings used when ther card did have video on it.

    what's next?

Please copy the content of the Log tab, save it to a text file, and attach it here.
Or you can paste it into the response, but it's much easier to deal with as a text file attachment.

Is the player playing the video file?  I don't see it loading/playing in your log...

when i made the setup files and loaded them from the sd card it stopped auto playing the video files. i'll try rebooting the unit with the video folder on the card.

the unit reboots to the default screen with the BrightSign logo and ip address, firmware version, etc. does not play the video. attaching the log from this reboot.

ok. here's the new one. video is playing. took some time to get into the player while video (1920x1080x24p) is playing. attached is the log file.

The MP4 video file is more than 2 channels, correct?

It looks like the player is detecting it (possibly incorrectly) as 2-channel AC3.

    video is mp4/h264/ac3 with 6 channels. only channels 1, 2, 3 (l, r, c) have content.

regardless, my preamp is not getting anything over hdmi. not even the two channels you describe.

Okay, this is a firmware bug.  It's not passing at all (and it can't downmix it to 2-channel because it has no AC3 decoder).

Multichannel AC3 in a MOV or MP4 container is sometimes misdetected and therefore not passed through.

Try the video in a TS container instead - that should work.

    ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -codec: copy -bsf:v h264_mp4toannexb output.ts

already tried that. the ts didn't even play. at least it didn't put image through to the screen. will try it again. have the files on disk. made the ts with tsmuxer.

Did you try converting with FFMPEG?

Send us a download link to your source file and converted file from tsmuxer.  Also send us the log trying to play the tsmuxer file.

here is the meta info from tsmuxer:

    MUXOPT --no-pcr-on-video-pid --new-audio-pes --vbr --vbv-len=500

    V_MPEG4/ISO/AVC, "path\to\file.mp4", insertSEI, contSPS, track=1, lang=und

    A_AC3, "path\to\file.mp4", track=2, lang=und

i assume tsmuxer uses ffmpeg. working from a laptop, the only windows pc around here. try to keep from loading it up with a lot of things i won't use much since the laptop is for other things. hoping to avoid having to load more stuff on it.
