Brightsign XT243 GPIO connection to Screen Monitor

Set-up: Appspace server with brighsign xt243 connected to a LG monitor screen.

Need to control the ON/OFF of the screen through appspace and need to connect GPIO port of the brightsign to RS232c port of the LG monitor.

How we can connect Brightsign XT243 GPIO to a screen monitor that has RS232C port so that we can control the screen from APPSPACE to schedule the TURN ON/OFF of the screen

Could you please show what would be the pins to be connected on the GPIO port.?

LG RS232C ports accept serial commands.  So to turn on an LG display you send ASCII "ka 0 01".  To turn off you must send "ka 0 00".  No quotes.  You would need an RS232 to USB serial adapter on the XT243 or buy a model with serial output (XT1143, XD1033).  Otherwise if someone knows of an GPIO to RS232 converter.

XT243 has no usb port only GPIO. So, we want to know how we can connect from GPIO to RS232C port of the LG monitor? Cant find cable from GPIO to RS232 online.. so how we can make it work?

I would agree with Allen here, but that is if players were not purchased yet.

In case it is too late to replace players, you could look into using IR, or something more adventurous like a serial over IP type of solution

What is the LG model? Is HDMI CEC an option?

Also, since you are using Appspace, you may want to reach out to them, and see what is possible on their end, as far as BrightSign goes.

We are usingl LG Screen Monitor: Model 55SM5KC , we will check if the display monitor has a HDMI  CEC feature.  If the monitor has this feature how we can execute the turn on/off on the display? is it coming from the appspace or from brighsign tx243?

As per appspace turn on/off feature is compatible with the brighsign xt232 using RS232 protocol.

That display supports Simplink which is LG implementation of CEC.  It must be set on and I believe there is another setting that must be set in that same menu...can't recall the exact verbage.

As to the XT243 and serial control...unless the GPIO port does something more than I understand (very possible) then I don't see how you do it.  If AppSpace claims you can, maybe you should ask them how that happens.  I have controlled Samsung, LG, NEC, and Dynascan with the XT1143, XD1033, and HD1023 using RS232 but not using the other model in each series that has no serial port.

Oh, and you attach a BrightControl command to objects in your Presentation and the option is DisplayOn.

To my understanding, when Appspace is involved, BrightAuthor is not being used at all.

Appspace would need to customize their solution to add HDMI CEC. Being a consumer oriented technology, I'd be very surprised if Appspace would go that extra miles.

At the end of the day, numbers matter.

If players are already purchased, or even deployed, then Jeremiah is at Appspace's mercy.

If no player was purchased yet, then it would be the time to pick a different player.

Jeremiah, could you share some information about the project scale, and its stage?

You are right Bright Scripters :) We will ask  the Appspace if they can have the HDMI CEC. All the players had been purchased and installed . We had 9 brightsign players and LG monitors. Hopefully we can have the solution on this :)

Any other suggestion on how to schedule automatic turn ON/OFF with the display with the current setup?

We cant afford to buy another brightsign model :(

    Thank you guys!

Any solution that I could suggest here, would depend on Appspace implementing it.

Another possible way to control the display power, is to put the BrightSign player in power save mode, where no video is sent out.

The display would then need to be configured to go to sleep when no signal is detected, and wake up upon signal resume.

Not ideal, because the lack of bidirectional communication with the display.

Hypothetically speaking; If BrightSign agreed to replace the players with a different model, do you have the budget to replace the players (shipping and installation)?

The XD1033 has the serial port built-in, and has the same price as the XT243...

Are you using any features in the XT243 that are not available in the XD1033?

    Hi Jeremiah,

HDMI CEC commands on Appspace can be sent and scheduled just like any standard Device task. I believe that Appspace has some pre-made device tasks for that already. I also believe this is documented on their website.

.. we are waiting for the CEC HEX value (turn ON/OFF) from LG, then we can test it. Hopefully we can make it working..

Thank you to all of you guys! big help
