    No,

The old network manager server doesn't work with BrighAuthor.

What is the alternative to the "old" manager?

There is not a new self hosted server.  Since there was limited interested in self hosting previously, I can't say there will be a new self hosted solution.

Signchannel is a portal you can use to control the units, using signchannels service.

You can use the BrightAuthor software, and setup your units to call into a simple webserver for updates. Then, you just need to publish your content and project to that web folder for the units to update.

And, there will be an option to publish directly to units on a local network, directly from BrightAuthor. This will be a local only option, and is expected to be released this quarter.

What happened with the option to publish directly to units from BrightAuthor?

It was only every available in some internal builds. It was pulled, but now looks like it should be available when we release brightauthor beta version 2.3. So, that beta should be availale somewhere in the next month or so.
