Can't load VGA program with VGA connected

I have a 1010 which on power up boot up flashes green then red 5 times, once off, loop. Diconnect the VGA cable reboot and it loads fine and the GPIO interface script works just fine. (100 clips triggered by GPIO in a random selected presentation). Ideas?
