SD Card Full - Old Cached MRSS files not being deleted.

I thought that the BrightSign units were supposed to be deleting old cached content when the SD card runs out of room?

I just had another player (HD220) stop displaying MRSS content, no error lights or anything to indicate a problem. I tried rebooting the player, player came up fine, but still would not play content, checked network connection, etc. all the things to troubleshoot normally.

Pulled out the SD card (16GB), to find that it was completely full.

Deleted all the files in the Cached directory, and reinstalled the card, rebooted the player, and all is well again.

What is the mechanism for the players to delete cached files?
Delete older unused cache files after X many days of use?
Delete older unused cache files after card is X% full?
How is this supposed to work?
Why is there no error light indications for a full SD card?

Can this be addressed to do a better job than it currently seems to be?

I would not think that I have that aggressive of content on this player, but it is a pain when a 16GB card fills up in 30 days, when there is only simple content on the player.

Please let me know, so I can best advise my clients who are also having the same issue.

Thanks.

John

You can access the diagnostic web server of the unit and delete the cached files. Click on sign in front of file name and press delete button.

Allow me to quote from my May 4th post with bolding added for emphasis...

"One thing that would help us in the interim while you work this out: It would be very nice if we could use the diagnostic web server interface to clear the cache manually.  Currently, it allows us to delete only one file at a time which means it would take about a half an hour of mouse clicks on EACH player to clear the cache.  Do you think you could add a way to delete an entire directory at once?"

I hope to have an update on the testing early next week. If it's going well, I'll expand the testing to a few more people just to confirm it's working as expected.

It appears that testing wtih 3.7.0.35 has gone well, and the mrss caching issue appears to be fixed. I"m checking on the release time frame for that build..

3.7.0.37 BrightAuthor version is now available at Software Downloads page. The mrss caching issue has been fixed.

So just publish affected presentation with Ver 3.7.0.37?  Not firmware updates or mimimum firmware that should be installed?  Thanks

Yes, just publish with BA3.7.0.37. The firmware that's compatible with BA3.7.0.37 must be installed on the players, otherwise the projects won't work.

Hello, looks like this may again be a problem.

I am trying to get more details and do some testing, but I have started to see an issue on some players with Media RSS feeds not updating, only to find the SD card is complexly full.

The player I have confirmed this on for sure is a XD1230 with v6.1.76 authored with BA v 4.7.2.5

I have another client that may also have this issue XT1144 with v7.1.95 BA version unknown at this time.

There needs to be a well defined routine in the Player Firmware that deletes old files especially when the SD cards are getting full, even when using 16 GB,  32GB, and larger cards.  And not dependent upon rebooting, as some time these players don't get rebooted for months. Something like a once a day check to delete old files.

I though the problem was clear enough the last time that BrightSign would never let this issue pop up again, but it seems we are.

Just to be clear, you have storage preferences enabled? Storage preferences have to be enabled for the player to properly manage dynamic content that  needs to be cleaned up.

    Where is this setting?

I do not see Storage Preferences under either Setup BrightSign Unit, or Presentation Properties.

And why isn't this enable by default? As often as people change content, this is an issue that almost everyone will have.

Under edit, preferences, Storage. It's not a setup option. It can be changed anytime you publish a presentation. It only affects dynamic content. Any static content published goes into the main pool folder. The pool content is checked every time there's a publish to make sure there's enough space. Dynamic content  (mrss) is stored in feedpool and the logic that cleans up that folder is tied to storage being enabled.  There's a feature request in to pick default settings for the options below so that it can be enabled by default.

I'm creating a ticket for you as I've seen cases where certain feed structures can prevent garbage collection from operating properly.
