USB port on LS322

I'm trying to use a USB-to-Serial converter on a Brightsign LS322 unit, but I can't get it to work properly.

I'm using the USB-Serial converter that HMS Electronic sells with its boards, so it has the Prolific chip that is required by Brightsign. I want to use one of HMS' serial input boards to connect more than 8 buttons to the unit.

1. Can you use a USB-to-Serial converter on the LS322's USB port?

2. If yes - how do I interface with the board in Brightauthor? I have tried the "USB input" option in Brightauthor, but it seems the Brightsign doesn't  read the inputs from the board. I've already tried different I/O-port settings, but still can't get it to work.

Any idea would be much appreciated.

    Yes, you can use usb to serial with the ls player.

    The usb to serial would show up as a serial port. So, it should be serial port 0.

    Is there a way to use media end event to send something back to the input device when using serial to usb? In another player we use serial strings to confirm end of file sent through rs232.

    Yes, you can attach a send, serial command to a media end event. If using usb to serial, and there's no other serial, then use serial port 0. Otherwise, if there is a built in serial port, you can use serial port 1.

    How is that handled? In Bright Author when working on LS322 model seems to have limited send commands so I'm not sure what the Bright Sign uses for USB. For send, I see : Zone message, UDP, IR, and Plugin. Or maybe I am supposed to use a different command. Thank you for the quick reply.

    Secondly I am having trouble getting the Bright Sign player to accept the commands over the usb to serial, I am unsure at what point it is failing because I believe I have the terminal program working correctly. I manually set the rate to 9600 to match what I use in terminal and have attempted sending the correct character (via USB input event) with and without CR.

    If you're using usb to serial, then it's a serial event you would use. Since the ls322 doesn't have a serial port, you need to create a project for a model that has a serial port, like the HD1020 or 1022. Then, you'll see the serial port options.

     

    The USB event is for devices that are HID like barcode scanners or anything that's emulates keyboard wedge.

    I'm trying to do the same thing an on LS322. I have a test program which is sending out "Port0" on Port 0, "Port1" on Port 1, so on and so forth for all ports. I have the presentation set up for an HD1022, as the posts above suggest to do. I'm not getting any serial messages out of my LS322 - just the sounds I have tied to the states that have serial output.

    When I move the same SD card to an HD1022, with the same Prolific Serial adapter, I receive the Port2 message. 

     

    I'm using BrightAuthor 4.1.1.21

    Brightsign Firmware on the LS and HD2 models is version 6.1.76

    Can you send us the contents of the system log on your player? If everything else is fine including using the correct serial cable, and you don't have serial debugging enabled on the publish, it sound like no port is being loaded with that cable attached. We can see for sure in the system log.

     

    If the diagnostic server is enabled on the player, you can log into the unit using its ip address, and go to the log tab. Get a copy of the log tab, saved to a file, and then send the file.

    Lmccallisters solution is working. While the "serial input" event is hidden for users with a LS422, it is clearly working on the USB port when just selecting a "more capable" Player like HD1024. Makes me wonder what else features are actually there but just not shown when dutifully selecting the "correct" player model. I am using this to connect a nexmosphere sensor.
