Bright author with windows 10 image rotation issue

Good Afternoon,

One of my schools in Camden has let me know there is an issue using windows 10 and the latest version of bright author, version 4.7.2.5

When they have a portrait image, which shows in windows explorer as a portrait image and shows as portrait in MS paint.

Then within the brightsign software the same picture shows as landscape, then brightauthor will resize if the image is too big, but still the image is rotated to landscape when it shouldn't do.

I then went home and surely enough recreated the issue and have provided a screenshot.

I have circled the image within windows 10 and the same image in brightauthor.

Please advise on how we can resolve the issue, as the school is trying to put a slideshow together and right now can't use any portrait images.

Kind Regards,

Jack

This has to do with the way Windows 10 handles the EXIF image rotation data for images, and not really a BrightSign issue.

Windows 10 doesn't change the native rotation view of the images if you tell it to rotate them clockwise or counterclockwise with windows explorer so they have the correct orientation. Instead it changes the EXIF rotation data, and then rotates them on the fly so they look correct to you when viewed by Windows 10 explorer (virtual rotation).

The best solution for this is to use PhotoShop, GIMP (free open source), or other photo software to rotate the image to the correct native view (physical rotation), and then re-save it before using in BrightAuthor.

Thanks that explains it, thanks so much for your help! I will pass on the solution to the school.

In Gimp it shows me the correct orientation, it would be good if BrightAuthor could detect the exif rotation data in a future release and give you the option to rotate using the exif data, or a tick box which either uses exif data or ignores it.

    Kind Regards,

    Jack
