Issues after issues...Setting up BrightAuthor to BrightSign Network, Player Set up, Wireless connection

So the project in my head is simple. We are using LS 423 units that have been outfitted with wireless wifi cards. The project is to show a looping non interactive production on shuttle busses. The internet connection will be obtained via the hotspot supplied from the Ipad that each shuttle bus has.

Issues we are having:

Setting up Brightauthor to the Brightsign network

Player setup (in general)

Wifi issue: We tested one player at my house that used a wireless connection from my home router through a simple file network. When we tried to use my phone hotspot it didn't work. I was assured that when done correctly it should've worked.

Any help with any of the following would be greatly appreciated.

    Good day!

    A few questions for you...

    1) Have you already purchased the BSN subscription and connected the LS423 to a group via the Setup Files?

    https://www.brightsign.biz/support/quickstart

    2) The player will connect to the SSID that has been assigned in the local player setup files.  If you use automatic DHCP it will assign the IP, etc via the router, or in your case the iPad.

    Cheers,
    Monica

    Hi Monica

First off, thank you for your suggestions...the quickstart info has been a huge challenge. I have tried all those methods and nothing. External keyboard to a smart TV  & Ethernet connection & Nothing. The PC application hasnt worked because of reformatting the player to the "Congrats Welcome purple Message" that should be on the screen but no luck. Currently trying to hook up brightauthor to my brightsign network account o format the player & that won't allow me to log in.

Also, I have watched almost every "setup" video I could find at least 5 times with no luck. If I had hair I wouldve pulled all of it out by now. haha

Let me know if you have any other suggestions cause I'm all ears. Thank you again for taking the time to help me...I'm truly so thankful.

It's not clear if the player is on your wireless network. Is the player on the wireless, but can't get to internet? Can you log into the player's ip address locally ?

If so,  what happens when you run the network diagnostics test from the diagnostic tab on the player?

Yuu mentioned a purple screen. Can you post an image of that?

    Lyndon,

It's not clear if the player is on your wireless network. Is the player on the wireless, but can't get to internet?

I am currently testing it on a wireless network...once I figure out how it works I will be installing the BrightSign units into the shuttle busses. (Each box has the wireless card & antenna installed)

Can you log into the player's ip address locally ?

    As of now no.

If so,  what happens when you run the network diagnostics test from the diagnostic tab on the player?

Nothing yet because we haven't been able to hook it to the network. This whole time we were testing the BSN cloud, had a bunch of connecting issues than later told don't use it for commercial now cause of the issues we're having. Now we are trying to get BA connected to our BSN & going back and forth with IT to figure out the issue.

Yuu mentioned a purple screen. Can you post an image of that?

Attached is a pick in which we were trying to achieve so that we knew are boxes were ready to be formatted like mentioned in the video.

Thank you for your help or any suggestions in this matter...you rock in advance!

Ok, that screen is from our bsn.cloud beta. So, are you using current brighatuthor, and trying to setup for current bsn, or are you using brightauthor:connected beta and trying to test the new cloud service in beta?

If you're trying to use the beta bsn.cloud, then you need to run a script to reset that unit to factory defaults, or log into the player's ip address, to index.html, and go to the control tab, and click on the factory reset button. This assumes you no longer have any setup files for the beta bsn.cloud on the sd card.

If you are trying to use the beta, then you wouldn't use brightauthor with it. You'd use the brightauthor:connected beta client.

We were trying to use the cloud but were told o stop is you are using it for commercial use now...so we have. Yes, we have just switched back to the old method of BrightAuthor & trying to set up for BSN.

So currently the 2 main issues we have are setting up a player through the BSN which I thought (that should be the first thing to do) but so far no luck & linking the Bright Author to the BSN but we are going back & forth with IT on that connection issue. I'm hopeful once these are figured out that it will be smoothe sailing.

First have you successfully reset the player to factory defaults?  This would wipe the registry settings associated with the bsn.cloud setup.  Once that's done you can redo the  regular bsn setup.

With bsn setup, there are two parts. The initial setup files apply some settings, and then try to download one file from the bsn server. If it can't get this one file, the player will be in a reboot loop. It'll boot, try to get the file, and if it fails, it'll reboot in under a minute, and try again.  Is your player looping  when trying to do the bsn setup?

If it's not looping, then it's reached the server, and should be listed on the bsn account.

To add to Lyndon's thoughts, we have also needed to ensure our firewalls supported the network traffic.  This support page will help if you need to ensure your network is allowing the traffic:
    https://brightsign.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/218065687-BrightSign-Network-ports-and-URLs-for-BrightAuthor

Another silly question... did you sign up for the BrightSign Network and setup a Group for the player?
    https://brightsignnetwork.com/public/registration.aspx

Here are the factory reset steps as well:

I believe I was able to reset the players using the control button method. The players now say: "Please insert storage device" BrightSign Logo & the model number Wired, Wifi, software update etc. YAY Thank you for that.

Yup I have a BSN account.

I think you are correct in the firewall being the issue to connect. (support has mentioned the same thing) I'm still trying to work on that issue but I'm a MAC guy & PC's are foreign to me so still trying to figure out how to get that disabled to allow that to connect...I will keep trying all the ways listed.

Thank you for all your help

You can test the firewall method by logging in to the BrightSign Network from the PC that has BrightAuthor installed on it.  We're primarily Mac based as well and use a PC laptop for our BA programming.

If you do not see the "Login to BrightSign Network" in the toolbar menu at the top, you will have to enable the BSN through the Edit > Preferences > Networking.

Then, login to the BSN using your account username and password.  If you are able to login - great!  A new tab will appear that says "Manage".  It's to the far right of the Create, Edit, Publish tabs.  Upon clicking onto the Manage tab, you should be able to see any groups that have been made in the account.  If you're able to see these - also great!  That means the BSN is communicating so far through the firewall.

Once logged into the BSN, you can now create new setup files for your device.  Goto the Tools > Setup BrightSign from the main toolbar at the top of the window.  Configure any settings, name, etc.  It's always good practice to enable the Diagnostic Web Server as well.  There should be an area where you can choose the BrightSign Network as your setup method.  It's adjacent to the Standalone, Local File Networking, Simple File Networking radio buttons.

Select and confirm the BSN group that you want to link the player to.

Proceed with the rest of the normal setup process, saving the setup files locally and then copy them to your microSD card.  Insert into the player and reboot it.

    Hope that helps!

    Cheers,
    Monica
