Performing a factory reset

Last updated: 12/10/2021

A factory reset will not erase the current firmware installed on the unit. Instead, it erases all values in the player registry, including all network settings, BrightSign Network recovery settings, touchscreen configuration settings, etc.

There are several ways to reset a player to factory defaults. Choose one of the methods below.

You can watch a tutorial video that covers methods 1 and 2 by clicking here.

Important Notes:

  1. If you have trouble with the other methods, use the Factory Reset Script method.
  2. If you are currently using a firmware extension, be sure you have the means to reinstall the extension as it may be removed by the Factory Reset process.
  3. If your player requires a .bsca certificate package for network connectivity, the Factory Reset process will clear that and you will need to manually reapply it.

Control Button

Note: The Control Button method requires the player to be installed with firmware version 6.2.39 or later.

  1. Disconnect player from power.
  2. IMPORTANT: Remove the player's storage device (SD card, USB drive, SSD). If the storage device is not removed, the player may improperly run the setup process before the reset can occur.
  3. Press and hold both SVC and Reset buttons.
  4. Apply power to the player.
  5. Wait until the red Err LED starts blinking rapidly.
  6. Release the SVC and Reset buttons (the Err LED will stop blinking).
  7. The player will perform the factory reset. In the end, the player will reboot and show BrightSign logo on the screen with system info (serial number, MAC address, OS version).

After that, you can use the storage device (sd card) to set up the player.

Diagnostic Web Server (DWS)

Note: The Diagnostic Web Server method requires the player to be installed with firmware version 6.2.39 or later.  If you do not know what firmware version your player has, use the Factory Reset script further below.

  1. Access the DWS.
  2. Navigate to the CONTROL tab.
  3. Click the Factory Reset button.

Factory Reset Script

Note: The Factory Reset Script method will will not provide any feedback on audio-only players.  Wait at least 3 minutes for the reset to apply before attempting to reconfigure the player.

To reset your unit to factory default settings:

  1. Download the factory reset autorun.brs file by clicking here (the file is also available at the bottom of this article).
  2. Copy the autorun.brs file to the root directory of a blank SD card or USB thumbdrive.
  3. Insert the SD card or USB thumbdrive into the unit while it is powered off.
  4. Power on the unit. In a moment, you will see a yellow message on the screen that states "Deleting Recovery settings". You will then see this message: "Settings Deleted. Remove script from flash card, and Restart".
  5. The script will delete itself and restart the player when complete. Once restarted, you should see a BrightSign logo on the screen with the firmware version that is installed on the unit.

If I want to run this on a remote system, what can I do to leave the web server in a state so I can log in and upload the correct files?

The reset have been done. Always the 3 leds on.

I try to put a little BrighAuthor project on it and the video is playing. But always the 3 leds are on, and the busy led blinking but it's normal.... it plays the video file.

    Hello,

I had locked up my LS422 trying to Stream IP video in a Presentation and  the _autorun.brs _file. worked perfectly to free up the unit.

    Thank You,

Your instructions are geared toward units that have video output, I have an LS322 with a solid LED. I have put the autorun.brs on a card and inserted it into the player. Nothing changed on the LED, and obviously I didn't have a video output to check what was happening. I waited as long as I thought was suitable (10 mins) and cycled power. It still came on with the LED solid. I later checked the card. It was blank. This unit is brand new out of the box.

    Michael,

There isn't a visual mechanism that says that the LS322 (same applies to AU320 model) unit is reset. After you power up the LS322 with the script on the SD card, wait 2 minutes. It should be enough. Then unplug power from the unit and remove SD card. If the card is empty, then it means the script has been executed. Why do you need to reset the LS322? What problem do you have?

It wasn't working after several attempts. We weren't getting any audio output at all no matter what we tried. I did a search and thought I found that if the red LED was solid that there was a hardware issue and it pointed me to this thread. Here is a link to that discussion:

    http://support.brightsign.biz/entries/20698882-How-do-I-interpret-the-LEDs-on-the-side-of-a-BrightSign-player-

The last comment is what made me think a solid red LED was a problem.

This rule (solid red LED) does not apply to LS322.

You should create a presentation with mp3 or wav files, add it to schedule (play all day, every day), specify firmware update (select production or beta firmware version), publish schedule to a blank SD card (firmware download may take several minutes), safely remove SD card from your PC, put SD card in the player and power up. Unit will install the firmware and play the presentation after that.

If playback starts, you can do future publishes without a firmware update. Firmware update on the player is required only when you update BrightAuthor software on your computer.

We recently purchased one of the XD233 units and I need to factory reset it. When I insert a blank microSD card formatted in FAT32 with this autorun.brs file downloaded off this page, it does not do anything. The unit powers up like normal and then shows a blank screen like it would with no content loaded.

Is there a separate file I should be using for the XD233 unit? Are there different steps I should be taking? For reference, I am not able to reach the unit on the network at this time to factory reset using that interface.

If you log into the unit's ip address, and go tot he control tab, there's a factory reset option in the diag page. You can log into the unit using "admin" and the password is the serial # of the unit. How is the sd card formatted?

As mentioned in my post, I cannot currently reach the unit on the network to reset using that interface, so telling me to log into the unit via the IP address is not very helpful.

    Sorry, I missed that part.

If you power up with no sd card, do you see the unit ip address on the screen? Can you post a screenshot of the sd card you're powering up the unit with. Is the sd card formatted fat32 or exfat?

That does sound strange....are you able to log into the player and do the setup from a computer or phone logged into the unit? I'll try and duplicate this problem with one of my units and a keyboard.

We encounter the same / similar issue with a XT243 player.

Player only shows black / blank screen.

    Formatted SD card Fat32.

Also tried new BS 4.6.0.14 with FW 6.2.63.

The player start with no logo or so and a blank screen.

Not responding not showing IP or so.

Holding reset and VSC buttons the red light flashes indeed but afterwards nothing.

Also tried the erase script but nothing starts.

@Jose - There is a SVC button - it a pinhole button on the side, but you can also use one of the other methods - DWS or script.

Performing factory reset from the DWS, does not have the same effect as reseting using the SVC+Reset procedure.

While ssh was enabled, doing the factory reset from the DWS, left ssh enabled.

Only after using SVC+Reset buttons, I was able to disable ssh.
