This has me stumped: I have a 30 minute video file playing on a loop. It has been running in an exhibition for around 2-3 weeks now and has exhibited no visible issues.
Suddenly, this week it has become very bad, in one case cutting out entirely for around 10 seconds. Any ideas why it would suddenly do this?

Is the player running 24/7?
If the problem goes away after a restart, than you have a solution: Reboot nightly if applicable.
Also, in order to reduce the odds for a failure, you could chop the file to 3 or 4 shorter pieces, and stitch them back together in BrightAuthor.
Are you using BrightAuthor, or simply loading a file onto an empty SD card?

That's a good point actually, I haven't. I'll give that a bash tonight. Alternatively, I can stitch them I suppose. I'm just going with the file on SD and a simple loop script, always worked in the past.

Not sure how stitching would work with bare files on the card, so you'd need to experiment.
They may get played in sequence sorted by file name.
In that case, I would name the files something like: Part01, Part02, etc...
The quality of the SD card can affect playback quality. We always buy Class 10 SD cards from BrightSign, so we don't have to worry about compatibility.
Programming with BrightAuthor would allow you to schedule a nightly reboot, schedule activity, and turn on/off your display on a schedule.
Scheduling requires that you connect your player to the internet, so it can sync the built-it clock.
