unable to access a brightsign at that ip address - XT1143

Everything WAS working fine.  I was testing new layouts, I published bia local networking, and the display turned purple.  I published again and got a flash of my content, then purple again.  I rebooted, and the content came up fine but since then BrightAuthor can no longer access the player.  I have tried everything on the support sites, documentation, and forums... formatted the SD card, rebooted, new setup card, over and over and still Bright Author cannot locate the player.

Any suggestions?

Can you access the diagnostics web page, by pointing a web browser to the player's IP?

Is it static IP or DHCP?

Connecting a terminal via serial port, may help you troubleshoot.

When things don't make sense, try the factory reset procedure.

i can access the DWS, and have tried factory reset several times as well... rebooted without card, then factroy reset via DWS, then formatted card and setup files again, then powered down player inserted card and powered back up... same result.  tried this several times now.

it is DHCP, but until my server at work releases the IP it is staying at 10.17.30.116.

i will check to see if i can get a usb-serial converter as i dont have a serial port on my computer.  what can i do from there?  any recommended terminal commands to try?

Not quite sure what that means: "it is DHCP, but until my server at work releases the IP it is staying at 10.17.30.116."

Make sure that your computer and player are on the same subnet.

By being able to access the DWS, you basically confirm that. Are you accessing the DWS on the same computer on which you run BrightAuthor?

Make sure your computer is connected to a single network. Either wired or wireless, but not both.

Installing Bonjour, and enabling it in BrightAuthor, helps discovering the player.

Make sure that there is no firewall blocking your traffic between the computer and the player.

    There are multiple ports used

    http://support.brightsign.biz/hc/en-us/articles/218067287-What-ports-are-used-when-publishing-Local-File-Networking-updates-

For trouble shooting, you could temporarily connect the computer and the player directly with a cable, and by that eliminating other network hardware that you need to go through. Better to configure static IP on both for this test. Turn off wifi if applicable.

All i meant is that although it is set to DHCP, it always gets the same address.

Brightsign player and computer are on same subnet

I am using DWS and BrightAuthor on the same computer.

wireless is turned off on both my computer and the player.

Bonjour is installed and enabled in brightauthor (edit>preferences>networking>enable bonjour check box)

not sure how to tell what the firewall is dowing, it was working all day until i got that weird purple screen and then after reboot all of a sudden brightauthor could not find it anymore... could firewall have started blocking when wasnt before?  Can you tell me how i could check?

disconnected from network and plugged player and computer together with single network cable... computer is set to static 192.168.1.177, created new setup files for player with static 192.168.1.178, but player gets 169.254 address.... player does not seem to be installing setup files from SD card anymore...  but still was able to reach DWS by typing in the 169.254.x.x address into browser...

i got a serial port for my computer, making a db9-3.5mm cable now and am trying to find drivers for the com port.

    Busy day :)

169.254 means that the player is still in DHCP, but cannot find a DHCP server.

Have you tried a new SD card? Those go bad sometimes, especially now that they are so small...

If you have a new BrightSign certified card, I would use that.

You may want to repeat the factory reset too, as the registry might have been corrupted.

yeah, i guess its on AutoIP b/c its not reading the setup files off the SD card.  I have a DHCP server app on my computer, i can try that if you think it will make any kind of a difference.

whenever i boot up with the SD card installed, it still has the last presentation i tried to upload via local network publish.  Strange considering how many times since then i have factory reset and erased the sd card.

i factory reset again just now, nothing changed.

would a bad sd card still be showing me the results i am seeing here?

A bad SD card may be causing the confusion. Both player setup, and presentation playback, are affected by the SD card's health.

Running DHCP on your computer, is not going to get you closer to the target.

I'm assuming that you are on the most recent firmware for that model, and the most recent BA?

    brightauthor 4.6.0.18

    xt1143 firmware 6.2.94

i think that is current, let me know if i missed a newer version.

i'll order a new SD card from the brightsign website and see where that gets us... i'm using a sandisk obtained from Fry's or Best Buy or something.  its a class 10 16gb micro, that's really all i can tell about it.

also one last question... is the input resolution on the HDMI input of the xt1143 supposed to be limited to 1024x768 or am i also missing something else?

I'd be very surprised if HDMI input is limited to 1024x768.

Its main purpose is to allow input from cable box signal, which normally would be full HD 1920x1080.

Until you are out of the woods, test without HDMI input cable.

Not sure but it is possible that you can remove the MicroSD, and use a USB drive for trouble shooting.

    Hi guys,

I've got the same problem with XD232. From BrightAuthor 4.6.0.18 I can't connect to BrightSigns with „Unable to access a BrightSign at that IP address“. In the older BA 4.3.x it works fine. Upgrade wf to the latest didn't help. Isn't any issue in the BA 4.6.0.18?

JAN - Cant be sure until I try, but this conversation ended with "A bad SD card may be causing the confusion. Both player setup, and presentation playback, are affected by the SD card's health."

I can't say I understand why the SD card would have anything to do with the player's ability to report on the network, or why they think the Lexar card they sell on their website is any better than the SanDisk card i bought at Best Buy... but we have exhausted everything else UD|_Sheme5h could think of for me to try, so I am ordering a card from them and then will probably ask for a new player if that fails to have any effect.

I didn't mean to imply that only SD cards sold by BrightSign work with their players.

What I meant is that given the issues mentioned, a faulty or incompatible SD card is causing problems.

Simply trying a different SD card, could help Colin move forward.

Yes, to be fair this was a previously-used SD card and there were no others handy at the moment, so in order to reduce unknowns and variables it seemed prudent to simply purchase the SD cards directly from Brightsign that way we all know exactly what we are dealing with.

This is very odd behavior. Can't think of a reason why a bad card would cause what you've reported. If you've already tried reformatting the sd card, I would try reinstalling the firmware on the player in secure mode. That's booting with firmware, while holding down svc button, then releasing after 6 seconds.

ONce the firmware's reinstalled, you can try the setup again.

If you can log into the player like you say, and get to the log tab, please post the contents of the log tab. If the unit's not seeing the sd card or can't run the autorun from it for setup, the the system log at boot will report problems with the sd card. It'll show that it ran the autorun.brs from TMP:/ location because it couldn't find SD:/autorun.brs.

Next time this happens I will try that.  I have managed to restore this player with a script provided to me at a thread i had running parallel to this one: http://support.brightsign.biz/hc/en-us/requests/50845

I don't consider this behavior odd at all.  Every brightsign installation I have ever done (admittedly only up to 6 or 7 installs now, but still not a pleasant experience) has some player(s) with "odd" behavior like this, and Brightsign's answer is invariably "you have a bad SD card" whether the card was purchased from BS.biz or not... although in this case I do think the card "went bad", an opinion i formed based on some weird partitioning stuff I could not undo using Windows' Disk Management... partitions that i could not erase or delete or otherwise access... a condition that did not exist when I first formatted this card for use in a player.  I have had more SD cards "go bad" in brightsigns than i have ever seen anywhere else.... by a wide margin.  For example, because I am a dumb nerd and think its fun, I run Linux operating systems with persistence off of flash drives and sd cards, for no real reason, and that's never ruined one. I have to imagine that that would be a taxing operation for a microSD card but apparently not as taxing as a BS player.

I know it's easy for BS to state that I personally am doing something wrong because nobody else has a record like that and everyone else seems to have no trouble with it, but a quick forum search will indicate otherwise.  I am slowly building a decent little list of tips and tricks like the one you suggested above, and in your credit THEY ARE VERY HELPFUL!!!  But to reiterate, i do not feel this is "odd behavior" and I have learned (finally) that if I am doing a large deployment that I will ALWAYS have a healthy stock of spare cards, because BS players seem to destroy them, and the behavior I experience when they do I have simply come to expect.  BS will continue to get business despite this because the feature set provided compared to the price of the hardware is basically unbeatable.

I'm having the same problem with an LS423 on firmware 6.2.94 using BrightAuthor 4.6.0.18. Can't connected to the unit via it's IP address either via the Manage tab or the Publish->Local Network tab.

Unable to access a BrightSign at that IP address.

You set it up using the local networking option? When you powered up with those setup files, the unit should have displayed on the screen that local network setup was complete, and that the unit was rebooting and waiting for publish. DId you see that message?

Or, did you see a setup complete message that asked you to remove the sd card?

"You set it up using the local networking option?"

No, I hadn't set it up at all, I assumed that's what I would be able to using the Manage tab.

So, I tried to "manage" it again now after have set it up manually with local networking enabled and yes it now does work as expected.

I was rather hoping that I could set these things up over the network, without having to write to the microSD cards locally first. Is this not possible? I suppose I could use the SD tab of the DWS to upload the setup files one at a time.

I'm sorry I must have misunderstood you. You indicated you were using brightauthor. I thought that meant you setup the player using brighauthor.

Out of the box, any series3 player, including yours, should boot with an sd card. With the sd card in, you should see the device setup page on your display showing you the ip of your player and telling you that you can do setup using a keyboard or by logging into the ip address that's shown.

You log into that ip address, which is at port 8080. If entering the iP along takes you to the diagnostic server, enter the ip address at port 8080. That should show you the setup screen that will let you do local networking setup over the network.

I incorrectly assumed you'd already done setup using brightautor, and that's what you'd reported wasn't working. There should have been a card in your box that told you to do setup this way.

Ah, ok. Yes, I did follow the instructions on the yellow slip of paper in the box, that states to browse to the IP address of the player. The important bit of information that's missing is maybe that the box needs to have the microSD card present for it to allow access to the setup?

Out of the box, without a card in, these LS423s seem to only have the DWS present (on port 80) once booted. I think one of them seemed to randomly redirect to port 8080 when I first tried to access it, but then just presented a message on an otherwise blank page that states something like, No File Found, or File Not Present.

Incidentally, now I have them set up, with cards installed, none of the boxes have any setup interface at port 8080. Just the DWS at port 80.

If I'm not mistaken, the setup interface shows only prior to the initial setup completion.

You may be able to get it back, after a factory reset...

Richard, there is a way to get that initial setup web interface to come back.  This link is a similar thread, on Feb 18, Alex posted a reply with this script that can be run on the player to restore the initial setup... from my experience "factory reset" does not do it, but this script does.

The problem, Colin, might be content still on the sd card. If you do a factory reset, but there's still content on the card on boot, the player will play that content.

SO, you have to first delete any autorun or sync files on the sd card first.

    Then, do the factory reset.

My personal experience is that it always works when I do that.

Good point, and thanks for the clarification.  To be fair, i think my SD card was trashed, but i did delete all files and hidden files on my SD card without any change in the factory-reset results.  I will definitely try that first next time i encounter this, but in the case I was working on this script is the thing that did the trick.

Yes that probably fits with what I'm seeing. With no card, the 8080 setup interface doesn't work, and when I then put a card in it had stuff on it, perhaps even an autorun.bsr file with network settings.

So OOB with a blank card in it should allow setup on whatever DHCP address the server allocates, on port 8080, right?

Hello - I am having the same issue with an XT1143 player that is less than one year old. The card being used is the same card that has been used in the player since its arrival. It was setup with a Static IP on our network, and set up for Local network publishing, which has worked all this time till now. We have reformatted the microSD card. The unit's diagnostic web server is accessible, but the BrightSign app is also unable to access the web server (Could not access web server for BrightSign unit). The unit is also able to be see on the network by all other devices, even behind the firewall, and always has been. I'm a little unsure of what other steps to take per all of the responses in this thread.
