The drawing below is incorrect. All BrightSign players with a Serial 3.5mm jack transmit on the Ring, so that for most devices, you can use a straight-through cable. no NUL needed...

I control LG displays using one of these depending on model. Tip to pin 3, ring to pin 2, sleeve to pin 5. This pinout will work for most applications but the gender of the 9 pin may vary.

Well, I have a few hundred in use in the field...at least the 3.5 to 3.5. For LG displays they work. For Samsung displays we use straight through.
You are correct, in both diagrams indicating the pinout of the crossover and DB9 to 3.5mm. My issue is that the manual indicates that the LG in a DTE device, receiving Data on Pin2, or the Ring. BrightSign players transmit Data on the Ring, or Pin2. That being said, a straight-through cable would be used. This indicates that the LG manual in incorrect, and the display is a DCE device, and receives Data on the TIP, or Pin3, same as the BrightSign player, requiring the crossover cable.
This is a confusing subject for many customers and integrators. Older BrightSign players that had a DB9 connector, complied to the RS-232 standard spec, and were considered DTE devices, per the old-school modem days. Here is a real specific writeup explaining the differences between DTE and DCE devices;
https://www.camiresearch.com/Data_Com_Basics/RS232_standard.html
Basically, DTE devices transmit data on pin-3 (the TIP) and receive data on pin-2 (the RING), with a male DB9 connector. DCE devices transmit data on pin-2 (the RING) and receive on pin-3 (the TIP), with a female DB9 connector.
BrightSign players with a 3.5mm Serial connector are intentionally configured as a DCE device, as most modern displays have adopted the DTE wiring standard (Tx=pin-3 or TIP, Rx=pin-2 or RING), allowing the integrator to use a straight-through TRS-TRS cable, simplifying the wiring. The 3.5mm serial transmit pin does not comply with voltage levels for RS-232 signaling (which requires a voltage below -3V for logical 1). In practice, the serial port can inter-operate successfully with the majority of RS-232 receivers, but some devices (including some projectors and Crestron equipment) require strict conformance to RS-232 levels and will not accept 0V as logical 1. In these instances, you can connect the BrightSign player to the serial device using a USB-to-serial cable.
The specific LG model referenced (42SH7DB) indicates per the manual, that it receives Data on Pin2 or the RING, and transmits Data on Pin3, or the TIP. This makes this particular model a DTE device, so in this case BrightSign (DCE) to LG42H7DB (DTE) would require a straight-through cable, as BrightSign transmits on the RING...BrightSign players do not transmit on the TIP. Previous documentation stating so was incorrect, and the current post is accurate.
