I need a 12v signal to trigger gpio. It will be on switching off (or vice versa) ... Is this possible without a dissimilar /voltage adapter, or will this fry the input of the unit?

Lyndon THe unit doesn't need any voltage for its input to be triggered. The output from the brightsign is only 3.3 volts. So, if you need to output 12v to trigger something you're going to need some extra power. We have a partner, hms electronics, that's made hardware for supplying from voltage from a player. You can check with them if they have something for you.
