Editors

Hello fellow Roku-users. As I am completely new to the Roku players (currently testing an older HD2000) I would like to know what editors for scripting are available before rewriting my own ones.

Kind regards,

Marvin

    Marvin,

I'm not sure what you mean by editors. the scripts are just text files, just saved with a specific extension. So, you can edit then using textedit on the mac, or any other text editor, or notepad of the pc. I like editpad lite for the pc because you can jump to specific line numbers.

If this didn't answer your question, please let me know.

Hmmm, ok, let me explain. I mean an editor where I can define zones, put content in them, set up scheduling, configure the players, etc. A bit like the online networkmanager, but far more advanced than that.

I've been programming editors for some years now (for Scala and other players), starting on the C64 and Amiga, but if the NetworkManager from BrightSign is the most advanced available I definitely will be writing one for that system too. The way BrightSign is offered now only opens up the real power for advanced users, not for the basic customer.

For instance: putting text on a picture now seams impossible to do from within the scripting (correct me if I'm wrong, I just started on version 2.0 of the software), which can be dealt with by using an editor that puts the text straight into the image.

I can create quite a long list of basic needs for a real good Digital Signage system and it looks like Roku is very far on the hardware demands on that list (is there already support for multiple displays?) and has set up a very good base for the software side (I think I can judge on that because I've been using and writing DS-players since 1985).

All I want to have now (either buy, borrow or write) is a good versatile (web)editor (CMS) that can really bring the power out of this system.

    Ahh,

Now I know what you mean. We are currently working on a desktop application that will give you a graphical way to arrange presentations the brightsign. This includes support for things like scheduling, multiple zones, etc.

You are correct that you can't currently put text on a picture. You can overlay a picture on video, or a text on video.

The brightsign will output the same content to multiple displays. Do you mean different content to multiple displays?

Cool, I can't wait to see it. If I can be an help in Beta-testing, consider this an offer to do so. And yes I mean different content to different outputs. This would be a real competition killer...

I prefer to communicate on the forum if possible, others might find our conversation useful, as I do on other topics.

    Kind regards,

    Marvin
