TEXT MESSAGE UPDATES BY END USER

Hi. I have a client who wants to send messages to the ticker box, without having to call me to update it. Just whenever he wants to communicate something to hundreds of employees. What's the best way of doing so? Can he do it from his cell phone? From an email? A web form he writes in? Any thought? -EDWIN HERNANDEZ <!-- s:?: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_question.gif" alt=":?:" title="Question" /><!-- s:?: -->

Set up an email to rss feed and then have him email the feed.

An easier way to do this is around the corner. BrightAuthor 2.3 adds support for twitter feeds. So, you can add a twitter feed to your rss field. And, any new tweets are added to the display, newest first. Should be out in beta in a few days.

Anything new on this topic since it was last touched in September?  A Twitter feed would be great, but this client does not want the 140 character limitation.  Is setting up an RSS feed the next best option?  Or is there a secure way an end user could FTP or otherwise deliver the text file they want to update directly to the BrightSign Network?  Thanks.

An RSS feed is still the best way. You can setup a live text field that is based on the rss and will change 30 secs after the RSS file is changed. There is not a ftp solution and if you want it to be simple IE phone changeable ect you'll have to do a php driven rss feed. I've set this up before and it works well. Clients like that they can just go to a webpage form there phone and update the text. I did have to write a custom webpage for this effect though.

Is there any movement on the development side into making the process of updating a text file ticker any easier?

I've read the other thread that talk about having to deleting the file from the zone then re-adding it again so that it updates appropriately.

I wish there  were something simpler.  Remote text ticker updates (does your app do this, I haven't played with it yet).

Just curious.  Ideally the authoring software should give you this capability.  I was excited about dynamic text updates but then saw that is was a brightsign network feature only.

Live Text allows you to do dynamic text updates on the unit over network. You can point the unit to xml file that unit can check every 30 seconds. When the content of xml file is changed, the unit will display the updated text in a zone on a screen. The xml file must be available via http link. Live Text feature is well documented in our FAQs and BrightAuthor user guide.

Or you can add the rss widget to the Ticker zone and play rss feeds on the brightsign.

These are the easiest ways to update text remotely.

In the latest version of brightauthor you can make a plugin (using brightscript) to parse an xml file and use its data to fill fields. Its not simple, but I've setup a script that changes a sign based on the outside temperature this way. If your interested I can share the script. Also the company I work for does a lot with BS signage networks and we can build a script and server software functionality for larger projects.
