Creating mpg2 files

I am a videographer, I work on a Mac, and we are trying to format mpgs for the BrightSign. I convert files all the time, but not for BrightSign. When trying to play an mpg2 on the BrightSign, the following happens:

1) The video is distorted and jumpy
2) The audio plays very low
3) The audio is garbled

All of the files play perfectly on my Mac. Suggestions? I've been creating the mpgs via Final Cut Pro, Compressor, and Streamclip, and all have the same problem.

If you download our quickstart kit from the website, there are videos included you can look at. I can also provide links to some other samples if that will help. We have many customers that use final cut with no problems.

What's the bitrate of the videos you are encoding? Initially, you should limit the bitrate to no more than 25Mbps.

How fast are the flash cards you are using? What's the rated speed?

What format is the audio? For mpeg2, it should be mpeg1 layer II or layer III.

As far as the video being jumpy, if the frame rate of the video isn't a factor of the refresh rate you've set on the display, then you might get jumpy playback.

For example, if the video is 25fps, then you should use a resolution setting that supports 50 or 75hz. This video would look jumpy at 60hz.

If the video is 29.97 or 30fps, then the resolution chosen should support 29.97 (only supported at 1080p over hdmi) or 60hz.

Thanks for the tips - I will have to get together with the tech guys. This is all brand-new to all of us and we're feeling very directionless.

How fast are the flash cards you are using? What's the rated speed? The flash cards are either 15 or 30Mbps - the videos play the same no matter which card they are on. I don't know what the rated speed is.

If the audio says it's mp2, then that's mpeg1 layer II.

Ok, if the frame rate is 29.97, then the resolutions you use should either be at 60i, 60p, or 29.97p.

    1280x720x60p

    1360x768x60p

    1920x1080x29.97p or 60i or 60p

If you're using 1080, then 29.97p will give you best output if your display supports it.

I just tried the mpgs (Attact, Interact, and ZONES) from the QuickStartKit on the BrightSign and I only get audio, no video.

Ok, how did you play them? Are you copying the files to a flash card, or are you putting them into a playlist?

If you are using a playlist, the problem is with the output setting used. The display is having a problem with the output setting, so it shows no video. Try setting the unit to 720p.

If you're just putting them on a card, then it means the brightsign and the display aren't synchronizing when the brightsign queries the edid on startup. so, I would use brightauthor to create a playlist where I can set the output resolution.

The files are on the flash card, but we are playing them through a playlist. We have 7 videos that loop.

Some of the videos have video, but it's very choppy. Some have no video. And some the audio is distorted, but the audio from the videos that I downloaded from the site is fine.

I did change the playlist to read

VIDEOMODE 720x480x60p (is this what I was supposed to do?)

The video that did play before turned green and was still choppy.

The video that did NOT play before still did not play, but this time there were white lines going across the screen.

I really need directions spelled out. I've never worked with this before, and I am completely lost. Please give me step-by-step instructions if I am not doing it correctly.

I do not understand why some of the video plays, why some of it doesn't, and why some of the audio works and some doesn't when I've looked at all the specs and everything looks exactly the same. I must be missing something, but I don't know what.

Can you send me an email at support@brightsign.biz? This may be easier to resolve over the phone.

Also, you should be using our BrightAuthor software for putting together your playlists.
