HDMI splitter on HD1020

Our BrightSign systems comprise an HD1020 connected to an ELO ET2243L monitor via HDMI with USB for the touchscreen.

We wish to be able to use an overhead projector for larger audiences, with the touchscreen still active (so that the presenter can control the BrightSign). When we connect a passive HDMI splitter we get video but no audio on the overhead; when we connect the overhead directly we have video and audio but the presenter cannot use the touchscreen (actually he can but "blind"; he has to guess where to touch). In principle we can use a mouse but that requires converting all sub-presentations (up to 20) to show the mouse cursor. An active splitter is $100+ and we are a charitable group with five systems; our budget won't stand such an investment.

Has anyone experience of using an HDMI splitter on a BrightSign system? Can anyone help?

I'm not familiar with the passive splitters. If you connect a different source to the passive splitter, does the audio work? Is it only the brightsign that won't pass audio through the splitter?

Is this a project that would work at a lower resolution that works over both hdmi and vga? That way you could use hdmi for one and vga for the other? Or, does one of your screens also support component? You could connect a vga to component adapter to the vga port, and use hdmi for the screen where you need audio.

I have carried out some more tests/research and it appears to be an HDMI restriction. HDMI "negotiates" with the devices connected and takes the "lowest common denominator". Since the ELO monitor has no audio HDMI doesn't send it.

I have posted in another forum (http://www.avsforum.com/t/1481348/split-hdmi-signal-including-audio) to verify this.

The VGA is not an option for us, we need full 1080 resolution. Also, AFAIK you can only drive one output (BrightAuthor > File > Presentation Properties > Main > Connector type is a drop-down of HDMI, VGA, Component).

    But thanks for thinking along.

The selections in brightauthor only control what resolutions you see. So, if you choose vga, then you see the resolutions that work over vga. But, all vga resoltuions work over hdmi. SO, choose vga well enable both hdmi and vga output.

If you choose component, you see the resolutions that are supported over component. So, you can plug in a vga to component cable, and use component. Again, all component resolutions work over hdni.

    Derek,

It sounds like you should be able to use HDMI to feed video to the overhead and touchscreen using your splitter, and then use the analog audio connection on the BrightSign unit for audio.

From looking at the model number, your touchscreen video input is DVI (video only) and not native HDMI (audio&video), which is why you are running in to this issue. It's not really a BrightSign issue, but more to do with the splitter, HDMI-DVI adapter, and displays.  The same issue should appear if you connect a DVD player via HDMI.
