Any way to prevent sending incorrect unit presentations to a mixed setup?

In our setup, I have 8 HD210W's and several XD230's - twice now, I've accidentally sent a presentation designed for a XD230 to our network of 220's - resulting in the dreaded "not for this unit - remove SD card and reboot" message on the displays. As far as I can tell, the only way to resolve this is to set them up again using a fresh SD Card configuration.

Is there no way to prevent this from happening, and is there a quicker way to get the units back to life, preferably without having to walk to each of them, especially since two of them are in remote locations. Sure, it is a silly mistake to make, but the results seem like something that software could catch and prevent?

    1) Create presentations for HDxx10 models. The XD units will play projects created for HDxx10 and HDxx20 series. HDxx10 can't play the presentations designed for XD devices.

    2) Place the XD and HDxx10 units in separate groups.

The only way to fix the problem is to create a project for HDxx10, publish it to a group, power the HDxx10 unit down, eject SD card, erase SD card, insert SD card back in the unit, and power the unit up.

OK - so bottom line is "don't screw up"? The units are in separate groups, but as I mentioned, this is obviously my own fault, I'm just amazed at the recovery method - especially with remote units, having to physically visit the unit and restore it is just crazy when the software should be able to prevent this from happening in the first place. It seems like BrightAuthor should know that the presentation is going to a group with the wrong unit, or that the unit itself should simply reject the presentation instead of letting it kill itself.

Thanks anyway for the quick response.

I had the same issue a couple of months ago and found a solution to erase the content by sending a format command through the advanced settings of BrightAuthor. I only had to request to turn off/on in every location the units were placed.

    Scott,

We're considering ways to add logic checks that would prevent this problem in future releases of BSN.

In the mean time, we have worked out a recovery method for remote units. Here are the steps:

    1. Create a new group in your BSN account and assign a very small presentation, something like a jpg with a notice that says: "Network Connectivity has been restored".

    2. In BrightAuthor or the WebUI, move the remote unit into that group

    3. In BrightAuthor, under the menu tools->Advanced Unit Control, enter the serial number of the remote unit and set the Action to "Recovery - don't reformat" and push the button "Add Action". Close this window.

    4. Have someone at the remote location unplug the unit and plug it back in.

    5. The device should come up in the new group with the small presentation. Then move it into a group with a correctly developed presentation.

Thank you - that certainly sounds easier than what I've been doing up till now.
