We are developing an app to control a few a bright signs units. The app needs to know the state of the unit so that it can display the correct layout.
Is there a way to request a variable from a bright sign unit and get it across the network to the app?

At the current time this isn't supported by BrightAuthor.
The brightsign unit can send udp commands over the network during playback. Your application can listen to these commands and act accordingly.

I noticed that there is a web server that displays variables. Do you know if anyone has tried to parse those out? Does this seem to be a reasonable approach?

The BrightSign app already supports this, but you have to run a BA 3.5.0.32+ autorun (not available externally) to be able to get these variables to the iPad app.
there will soon be a BA version available to the public that will allow you do that (within 4 weeks, I would think)
