Use GPIO to control other hardware

Is the GPIO interface only an input or is it possible to control other hardware with it (for example turn on a light?)

    Each GPIO can be set to be either input or output. and yes they can be use to control other devices.

    Is the GPIO used to link the BrightSign units in order to synchronise them (as a stand alone system). I need to play and synchronise three videos - without using internet option.

    No, sync is done over Ethernet. To synchronize two BrightSigns you need a single Ethernet cable to connect them. For more units, you can also use a hub/switch/router or the units can be on the same network.
