Mixed HDMI cabel length and HDMI amplifiers

Hi

I would like to know will mixing cable length will affect sync between screens. All Brightsign units will be located in one place behind video wall. However due to the number of screens (18) and location of LS422 units some screens would require only 5m (16') HDMI cable while other need 15m cable (50').

Additional question: will 15m cable require amplifier and if I add amplifier only to 15m cables will this affect overall sync across all the screens?

I plant to get this 15m cable (they state that :

They look like a reliable company with good products, but if somebody can recommend any other cables I am happy to listen :)

No, in the distances you are describing, there would not be any sync delay between different length cables.

15m cable length is cutting it close, but should be ok with the cable you are looking at using, or other Good quality HDMI cable.

Depending on install environment, with cables of that length there is slim possibility of issues because of interference from other electrical equipment in the vicinity. If so, you can add HDMI amplifier. Most quality amplifiers also should not add any delay or cause synchronization issues.

Why don't you just put the BS units on the displays of the videowall?

Will be the shortest distance of the HDMI cable possible.

Hi Roni, thanks for the suggestion.

I was considering this, but I was afraid that heat generated by consumer class TV that will be used on site can cause problems to BS units over long time of usage.

Second (and bigger) issue with this idea is the fact that in my case once screen are installed on a wall, there will not be an easy access to the back of the displays. If I would need to do any troubleshooting  (replace/restart BS units etc), I need to do it out of sights.

You will use consumer class TV's to make a video wall? It depends on the configuration of the wall, but I would be more concerned if the the consumer TV's will be able to handle the heat than the BS players.

Ok the second argument is a better one. I thought you were going with some videowall system that has easy access wall brackets as it looks like a big videowall. Then rack and HDMI cables it is. 15m with quality cables should not be a problem. In any case you can always use cable equilisers if there is a problem with some of them.

TV's were managed by client, I had no influence over what they will choose as displays and I need to work with what they provided. Unfortunately this is far from perfect. The only good thing is the fact that layout of the displays is quite spread vertically, so heat from TVs should  easily escape as it is spacious and well air conditioned place.

Cable equalizers will be my back up plan in that case.

Once again thank you both for your posts.

Oh. I feel your pain. With projects like this the problem is always that if the end result is not as good as it should be (because of inadequate equipment), the blame will always be on the intergrator and no one will know or care, that the inadequate devices have been purchased by the client.

If the customer has ideas to mount the displays vertically let him/her know that there could be problems with the displays in the ling run due to compression of the screen, as consumer displays are usually not intended to be mounted vertically and their hardware is not built with vertical mounting in mind. Just to be on the safe side.

Best of luck with the project.

Oh, I don't know why I wrote they will be mounted vertically. Just to clarify: all the screens will be in landscape mode and the overall layout of video wall will be spread horizontally across wall. Now it make more sense what I wrote about easier heat escape.

Thanks for the hint about vertical use of consumer TVs.
