Create best quality H.264

I'm looking for a way to create the best quality possible H.264. I have always used Compressor but it's hard to control the profile level for H.264. With previous versions I was happy with the results, but now I am getting bad banding on gradients. I've attached some screenshots to show the issue, these are the same setting with different versions of compressor and OS X.

Is ffmpeg a better option?

I'm not concerned with the time it takes to encode, I'm looking for the very best video quality that will run on HD222 and XD230.

Any help much appreciated.

We've had trouble with Compressor encodes also.

Handbrake has been the go-to encoder for us although we also have others in the toolbox.

Try bumping the encode level up to High- 4.2 to increase the Luma samples/s

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264/MPEG-4_AVC

The XD may slightly more capable of MB/s than the HD.

    Thanks for the advice.

I'm very happy with the image quality produced. But havent had time to test in the media players yet.

One thing handbrake only seems capable of producing VBR ACC audio, is this compabitle?

I don't believe the audio has given me any problems. I hadn't realized HB didn't do CBR. There may be (or not) options using the advanced tab and a simple command line added into the right box. If you need a seamless loop then PCM audio may be required. There is a post about it in these forums somewhere.

If you can't test the playback because you don't have Brightauthor on your Mac you should be able to chuck the video onto a blank Fat32 SD card and it will play and loop. (I hope... Not had to do that in a while) Or there are simple "play this video" scripts knocking around the forums. A bench test is always advisable unless your confident enough to "fly by the seat"

We usually setup the box on the network in our workshop and publish directly to it with Brightauthor using simple file networking. This is by far the fastest work flow for bench testing and R&D in our set of circumstances.

    Good luck.
