I just purchased a HD223 --- it's sadly not possible to connect it to the Ethernet.
A couple of questions please
1. Does it has WiFi embedded?
2. If not (which I presume) do I specifically need to get the BrightSign Wifi/Bluetooth modules or can I get any?

Unless you bought one that already had a WIFI card installed, it doesn't come standard with WIFI. There is a WIFI/Bluetooth module - WS-103 that can be purchased and installed. I do not believe that they are available on the BrightSign store anymore (https://store.brightsign.biz). They only have the dual antennas listed for the XD/XT series 4 and the series 5 players.
I did a quick online search and most outlets are showing no longer stocked. BrightSign is not making them anymore either. Maybe you can find someone on the forums here that have some backstock of the WS-103 antenna.

Yeah, the WD104 is not compatible with the Series 3 players unfortunately.

You would need a microSD no matter how you plan on internet connectivity. However... I have used one of these in the past with success.

It connects to the WIFI and then you connect it via an ethernet cable to the BrightSign.

I have a comment pending approval, but if it's denied - look up an IOGEAR wireless to ethernet device on Amazon. The ASIN is B018YPWORE. It connects to WIFI and then you connect the ethernet cable to the BrightSign. It's a pretty slick device and we've used it with players from the HD410 / 1010 all the way up to current series 5 players.

I am in France and I found the WIFI/Bluetooth module - WS-103
I wrote to them to confirm availability so i have now two potential solutions.
Side question, do you believe I can be streaming live content such as FashionTV to the HD223?
or Souvenirs from Earth (which seems down at this very moment)
You may need to check a few things:
1) If they have usage rights available for public/private streaming. It could be under copyright.
2) Whether there are media RSS feeds available

3) If there is a YouTube livestream you could embed as an HTML page but would have to setup your own network checking scripts for online/offline status.
4) Their video streaming protocols need to match what the BrightSign is capable of handling:

There are several ways you could go with it, just depends on what works in your situation. The Series 3 players are a little underpowered for heavy stream so you may see some artifacts or compression blocks or lag.

So I did get a wifi extender with ethernet cable connection, which I plug to the brigthsign after factory resetting it.
I am trying now to save the network configuration to the MicroSD card, without success --- the logs are very long to make sense of it.
Precision:I am using the MicroSD which came up with the reader. It does has quite a few folders (brightsign-dumps, feed_cache, feedPool, pool) and files already installed. Shall I reformat the card first?
Am I at all going the right direction with all this?

If you factory reset the BrightSign, then you will need to recreate the setup files for the device using BrightAuthor (Tools > Setup BrightSign Unit). There is a section in the setup to fill in the information. Keep the WIFI disabled on the BrightSign, as the WIFI extender will connect to the WIFI. However, on the "Advanced Network Setup" button, be sure that the Wired and Wireless are both set to "Obtain an IP address automatically".
On the Network Connection Priority, move the "Wired" above the "Wireless" with the arrows. Then, tick the box to enable your diagnostic web server (put user and password if desired), and tick your publish type (standalone, local file network, simple file network, BSN, etc) on how you plan to publish the content.
Then, save the setup files to a fresh new formatted microSD card (should be blank).
Put the card in the BrightSign and power cycle it.
Then, publish your presentation as you have selected (standalone will require you remove the card once it has finished the setup process to save the presentation back onto the card).

Mmmmm ok sounds slightly complex! I will try a couple of days but in any case a big thank you already.
Not sure I get it right, the Brightsign would then read the network details (including SSID and password) from the freshly formatted microSD card? I will then be able to ask it to read the videos from a google drive online?
