BrightSign XT4 "Firmware Version" vs "Boot Version"

What is the difference between a BrightSign XT4's "Firmware version" and it's "Boot version".

How is it possible that if I upgrade 2 different brightsigns XT4 model XT1144 to the same 8.5.36 Firmware, but one has Boot version 7.1.53 and another has Boot version 8.0.15?

The Boot version is the boot loader version.  The boot loader is unrelated to the OS/firmware version (though the firmware does depend on it) and does not affect standard player functionality.

So yes, it's possible to have two BrightSigns of the same model with the same OS/firmware versions but different Boot versions.  Save for functionality changes due to hardware revision, which are rare, the functionality of the two units will be the same.  Except for rare exceptions, player functionality is determined by the OS/firmware version, not the Boot version.

Similar to smartphones and tablets, the boot loader provides Secure Boot/Safe Mode firmware recovery which prevents rendering a unit completely inoperable in the event of a failed OS/firmware update.  Updating the boot loader, however, does present the risk of rendering a unit completely inoperable (aka "bricking" it), so it is extremely rare for us to update the boot loader with OS/firmware updates in the field and it will be documented in the release notes when it does happen.

We do have a use case for updating the boat-loader. We noticed that we have two BrightSigns connected to a system with the same Firmware, but because of their different Boot Loader version the authentication for the API's is different.

The BrightSign with firmware 8.5.36 and boot loader 7.1.53 uses "Basic Authentication" for it's API's

The BrightSign with firmware 8.5.36 and boot loader 8.0.15 uses "Digest Authentication" for it's API's

We would expect that the api authentication would be part of the firmware version, not the boot loader...

This is an issue as our external system is expecting the same authentication scheme for all BrightSigns with the same firmware

That doesn't make sense - the APIs are handled in the firmware/OS, not in the boot loader.

Please open a support ticket and include the Registry Dumps from both players.
