4K1142 issues with Static IP

Anyone ever have any issues Setting Up 4K1142's with Static IP's (Networked with Local File Networking)?

I have a couple of units, that when setup with Static IP's, then don't see the Internet (but communicate fine on the local network).

If I set them to Obtain IP Automatically, then they see the Internet fine.

Same settings I have used on many different models (HD220, HD1020, XD1230, LS423).

In the Diagnostic Web Server log I see:

NetworkTime: Failed: Could not resolve: time.brightsignnetwork.com (Could not contact DNS servers)

And if I run Network Diagnostics, the Check Ethernet everything has Pass, but under Check Internet it shows:

Result: No name servers set and proxy not in use
Checking DNS servers: FAIL: No name servers set and proxy not in use

Network configuration shows correct on the units.

Nothing fancy in the settings, all standard stuff DNS Servers are the same DNS servers that Network uses, ones I have used for a long time:

<timezone>EST</timezone>
<unitName />
<unitNamingMethod>appendUnitIDToUnitName</unitNamingMethod>
<unitDescription />
<specifyHostname>no</specifyHostname>
<useProxy>no</useProxy>
<useWireless>no</useWireless>
<timeServer>http://time.brightsignnetwork.com</timeServer>
<useDHCP>no</useDHCP>
<staticIPAddress>192.168.1.41</staticIPAddress>
<subnetMask>255.255.255.0</subnetMask>
<gateway>192.168.1.1</gateway>
<dns1>8.8.4.4</dns1>
<dns2>208.67.222.222</dns2>
<dns3>74.82.42.42</dns3>

Firmware 6.2.147.9

I've tried different SD cards, Factory Reset, different network cables, different network switch, different IP's, etc.

I can publish fine from BA to the units, they just wont connect to the Internet if configured for static IP, but do fine on DHCP. Even if set to the same IP as what was issued by DHCP.

Network is all Ubiquity UniFi gear, switchs that BrightSigns are on are Netgear Prosafe's off of main UniFi switch , nothing in those settings that would prevent any access from any address in that IP set. Everything else on network is working fine, including other BrightSign players.

I'm not sure what else to try, that I haven't already. I haven't changed anything in the Setup BrightSign unit config in quite a while, except the last octet of the IP address when putting additional units on this network for testing, etc.

For static IP addressing, you will need to generate and apply player configuration files from BrightAuthor 4.6.0.36
    https://s3.amazonaws.com/brightsignbiz/brightauthor/4.6/4.6.0.36/setup_BrightAuthor_4.6.0.36.zip

Or factory reset the player then complete set up using On-Device setup with firmware earlier than 7.0.60
    http://support.brightsign.biz/hc/en-us/articles/218065977-How-do-I-restore-reset-a-unit-to-Factory-Default-settings-

You cannot successfully set static DNS with firmware 7.0.60, BrightAuthor 4.7.1.12, or - as of this writing - the Device Setup file package from http://www.brightsignnetwork.com/

Note that only player setup is affected.  Once set up you can publish from BrightAuthor 4.7.1.12 or BSN.

On-Device Setup will be fixed in a newer firmware release.
BrightAuthor will be fixed in a newer release.
BrightSign Network Device Setup will be fixed in a future update.

So is there a way to install 2 versions of BrightAuthor? If you try to install older version, the new installer only gives you option to Exit the installer. No options for installing in another directory, etc.

Now I need to have 4.6.0.36 to provision IP's and 4.7.1.12 for projects, so either uninstall, install, configure, uninstall, reinstall, upload; or carry around 2 laptops for event projects.

This is really a pain.  Any idea as to when this will be fixed?

    Thank you.

    John,

This issue is fixed in the recently released 4.7.1.14. You can get it here.

    Regards.

OK, so with 4.7.1.14 - the older players are not accepting the setup (HDx20's and XDx30's) - the units are giving the 10 flash red led error.

These units are accepting the setup files from 4.6.0.36 fine.

4.7.1.14 said there were updated firmware requirements, but on the Firmware Update page, it says production release for HDx20's and XDx30's is still 6.1.76 which is the firmware I have been running on all of those units.

I haven't tried any 4K units yet, it's looking pretty grim so far. The XT1143's took the set up file fine.

So does BrightAuthor 4.7.1.14 not work with the older players now?

BA 4.7.1.14 fixed the static IP configuration issue but does have a different issue with Series 1 (XDx30, HDx20) players. Please update to BrightAuthor 4.7.1.22 or newer.

JRB, did you ever find a resolution to your issue? We have four LS423 players that are experiencing almost the same problem. I used to be able to connect to the internet and run HTML5 presentations, but it seems some combination of firmware/BrightSign version changes broke that setup. I don't know which combination to downgrade to, if that is the fix.

NetworkTime: Failed: Could not resolve host: time.brightsignnetwork.com

    Check Ethernet

    Result: OK

    Check Internet

Result: No name servers set and proxy not in use

My players communicate through the local network, but they can't connect to the internet.

    Brian:

As I recall, I think the issue has to do with the setup files being from an older version of BrightAuthor, and then publishing a project from a newer version of BrightAuthor to the same player.

This shouldn't matter once the players have been setup, but unfortunately I think in some cases it does and the newer files conflict with the existing settings.

The solution I found was to create a new set of setup files with the same network settings as I previously had using the (at the time) current version of BrightAuthor, and reformatting the SD cards and installing the new setup files. Then publish the project again to the player.

BrightSign should always make the player setup forward compatible, but I do not think this is the case based on my experiences lately. It's been a pain.

Interesting. Seems to mirror how my issues began. After I updated either the player firmware or BrightAuthor version they stopped connecting to the internet. I've formatted the players and created new setup files with the latest version of BrightAuthor, but that hasn't fixed it for me. I might try your method of obtaining the IP automatically to see if it's even a workaround.

    Thanks for the response.

    Sorry that wasn't much help.

They keep making software and firmware updates that seem to solve some problems, but then create new ones.

Do your setup files have DNS servers set?
Your screenshots say DNS isn't set.  That would prevent any Internet sites from working unless you're using IP address instead of name.

Also no DNS means it isn't resolving time.brightsignnetwork.com so it can't set the time - and especially on an LS423 the time will be lost if unplugged for too long - which would result in not being able to connect to any HTTPS sites.

Most websites redirect to HTTPS even if you use a HTTP URL, so that would prevent HTTPS from working even if you had a HTTPS site that allowed reference by IP.

That worked. I set up the unit again with new DNS servers and now they connect to the internet.

I had been confused earlier that the IP addresses in my HTML5 presentations weren't resolving. Didn't know that HTTPS could be the reason.

Thanks for the help getting this working again.
