New XD234 with 7.1.53 never completes setup

Our newly-arrived XD234 starts up normally, but when we complete the web wizard and get the "Please wait for the device to complete the process." nothing happens. If we let the auto-configure wizard run, it displays "Device Setup has automatically timed out. 

Firmware is v7.1.53 and the unit has a freshly-formatted Fat32 16 GB SD card.

The :2999 page displays no errors, just the URL for the setup page.

What are the next steps?

    Did you ever get this resolved?  My customer is having the same issue and I'd to learn what the fix was from you or from BrightSign.

    Actually, I somewhat misspoke myself. The last page of the setup wizard had 8.0.33 in the list box but when I switched to "7.1.53 (don't upgrade)" the unit completed setup normally and is now in production running 7.1.53. 

    The problem unit is off displaying stuff somewhere but I can surmise from this comment (pulled from an email response to their tech support) that the firmware upgrade as a part of the new unit setup doesn't actually work. As far as I know the unit is still running on 7.1.53 without issue.

    The firmware upgrade in on-device setup isn't broken.  It just doesn't work in some cases where the player has limited Internet access, and in some firmware versions that will cause the on-device setup not to complete.  Choosing not to update the firmware avoids the problem accessing the firmware update in those cases and allows setup to complete.
