XD 1132 serial connection issues

I am using a brightsign XD1132 and I would like it to receive messages from my pc using MAX Msp. I am using a Rs-232 cable with a usb-to-rs232 converter to connect the brightsign to my laptop. 

I am using the default serial port preferences for the brightsign. however I can't seem to receive or send any data through the serial port. I tried using Putty and Hercules to track incoming data through the serial port but nothing is going through. I am using a simple send string message in Brightauthor to send a test string over Serial. 

What could be going wrong?

  Not all USB to RS232 are created equal.

  My first guess is that you might need to crossover the Rx Tx lines in the serial port wiring, using a null modem adapter or similar.

  What is the USB to serial product that you are using?

  Thank for your response. the usb to rs232 converter i am using has

  connection 1, type USB 2.0 plug (type A)
  connection 2, type D-SUB/RS-232 plug (9-pin)

  I know also tried it on a PC which has a built-int serial port. Unfortunately I still get no response whatsoever, so I am starting to guess that the cable might be the problem. I will purchase the adapter you recommended.
