in creating a presentation i might go through quite a few test versions. what is the best practice when i want to change my players from, say, test version 1 to test version 2? do i just publish and it will overwrite? do i have to go all the way back to formatting the cards and setting up the players? i haven't seen this topic addressed.

LIke you've suggested, I would roll a version number at the end of the project. When you publish it will overwrite the presentation on the brightsign.
Keep your old project versions so you can roll back.
Check the management tab of brightauthor to confirm which presentation is loaded. Or in BA:Connected hover over the brightsgin in the publish tab.
