Before I take the devices down, I wanted to see if there was a simulator/emulator where I can test my changes?

There are BrightScript emulators but they do not emulate the BrightSign hardware.
Those do have value when it comes to checking code syntax correctness.
It is recommended to become comfortable with debugging directly on a physical player.
The BrightScript Debug Console and the BrightSign Shell are your friends...
