HD210 HDMI out lower half of screen video noise

Hello:

Saw something new I haven't seen before.  HD210's connected to LG Flatron M4224C displays.  The top half of the screen showed the output from the BrightSign's fine, but the lower half of the screen was all digital garbage/noise.  Tried another HDMI cable, the same, tried another BrightSign, the same.  BrightSign's and content were supposedly tested on a display before being sent out to trade show, but I do not know what model monitor they used. Updated firmware, the same issue. Used the infamous Reset All script, output was normal at the end. Went back to the Published file set, and it went back to the lower half of the screen with the digital noise/garbage.

I didn't author the content, so I don't know what refresh frequency the project was set for, but I do know it was set for 1920x1080 resolution, same as the video files.  On a whim I built a new project (I had a copy of the video files - it was just a simple short loop) at 1920x1080 60i - and loaded that onto the player, and it came up playing fine.  I am not sure what the originally authored content was set for, but the LG Display should have been able to display any format that the BrightSign puts out, so I'm not sure what exactly was going on, but at least they are working now.

Has anyone else seen anything like this?

Was the content tested on the same LG Flatron M4224C display before? Double check the resolution of the presentation. What is the framerate of the video that you're playing? Also, what's the bitrate of the video?
If you are using 1920x1080 resolution on the display, then your content should be 1080 as well.
If your display is set to 1920x1080x60p, then your content can be 1920x1080 at 30fps.
If your display is set to 1920x1080x50p, then your content can be 1920x1080 at 25fps.

If your display supports 1920x1080x29.97p and 1920x1080x30p, you will get better results.

1080p @ 29.97 is the best 1080p output on the HD210. Check out video quality technote in this FAQ:

This could be content/presentation layout related. Could you please post the BPF file?

I don't have the files that were on the cards anymore, as I had to put the working content on them after I found something that worked.  I wasn't given a copy, because I was giving the original video files, that I could author new project from if there were any issues, since it was just a single video loop.

The short video that was being looped was 1920x1080 29.97p avc1 Main@L4.0 mov  - And I would assume this was the format that the the project should have been in.  And, I am not completely sure, but I think the first screen resolution I tried in BA after updating the  firmware and running the reset script was 1920x1080x29.97p which gave the same results with the garbage/noise on the bottom half of the screen.  The 1920x1080x60i was the first format that did not have the noise issue, and looked clean, so I went with that.  I didn't really have time to test every possible resolution to see what worked and what didn't.

I am sorry I don't have more to go by, this was a Rental & Staging situation, and I was hired as a freelance tech to make sure everything worked and troubleshoot if it did not  The HD210's are not mine, and the content that was sent out was not mine.  It was just something that I have never seen before with HDMI video from any device, where the what seemed to be exactly the top half of the screen was fine, and the bottom half had this digital noise/garbage.

Unfortunately there is often some issue with BrightSigns used in Rental & Staging, as every time they are used on a different event with different firmware and configured based on content and person authoring the content..  It's almost to the point were I want to update the firmware and run the reset script first thing just to be sure I have a clean slate, and I always bring BA and the latest version of firmware for all players with me.  Unfortunately people assume you just have to send the players out to the event with the content on a flash card, and plug them in and it works. Sometimes it does, but usually not.  They just get reconfigured so many different ways compared to a permanent install situation.
